Each spring for the past 28 years, fourth and fifth graders from Berkeley public schools are invited to compete in the In Dulci Jubilo's Art, Poetry & Essay Contest. The contest gives students an opportunity to express their ideas on community issues through creative writing and visual art. Contest winners receive certificates, medals, and cash prizes in their categories.
The theme for 2011 is "Let's Move To A Healthy Future!," focuses on the Let's Move! childhood obesity challenge initiated by First Lady Michelle Obama.
The deadline for the entires was Thursday, March 17, 2011.
In 2010, the theme was "Health & Community." Nearly thirty students won prizes for their creative work on the topic. Parents, teachers, principals, community dignitaries, and the In Dulci Jubilo Board of Directors honored their efforts at our annual awards ceremony which was held on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at Washington Communication and Technology Magnet Elementary School.
The 2011 Arts, Poetry & Essay Awards Ceremony was held on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at Rosa Parks Environmental Science Magnet Elementary School. Details about the contest are distributed each January to the principals and fourth and fifth grade classroom teachers in the BUSD. The teachers are encouraged to create assignments around the chosen theme. Student entries are submitted by teachers for pickup by In Dulci Jubilo Board members in the Spring. Community volunteers judge the students' work.
