2011 Grant Winners
In 2011, In Dulci Jubilo, Inc. awarded thirteen grants totaling $46,750. These grants have the express purpose of helping to narrow the achievement gap. Below is a list of the 2011 grant recipients:
Jefferson Elementary School - Afterschool Learning Program: $4,000
Maggie Riddle, Principal
Project Description: The Afterschool Learning Program (ALP) will provide academic support to students who are struggling in a variety of academic areas. Teachers select students who are behind intheir grade level, or who have not mastered specific standards. The Afterschool Learning Program will provide group instruction to students in a supportive setting.
The Berkeley Chess School - Outreach Program: $10,000
Elizabeth Shaughnessy, Executive Director
Project Description: The Berkeley Chess School provides a proven, cost-effective way to engage children in learning that will help close the achievement gap for students from economically, ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds. We propose to teach chess to 330 students in eleven classrooms, one hour weekly for 24 weeks in the following six Title One elementary schools in Oakland: Learning Without Limits, Global, Futures, Maxwell Park, Santa Fe and Esperanza.
Berkeley High School - Youth Leadership Project: $4,000
Irma Parker, Parent Outreach Program Specialist
Project Description: The Youth Leadership Project will include teachable moments that will help youth develop skills to overcome life's challenges by providing leadrship and community services. It will enhance self-worth, values and motivation in today's youth. This method is strength based, identifying strengths and empowering youth to develop their own tools in order to address their issues. Youth will engage in a series of activities that will focus on self-acknowledgment, restoration, healing, self-discipline and authentic self.
Berkeley High School - Student Court Program: $5,000
Oscar Rojas-Soto, Student Court Director
Project Description: The Student Court provides an alternative to suspension for students facing discipline, and gives students a role in discipline. Students voluntarily accept Student Court referral for sentencing by their peers, learning how their offenses have harmed others and making amends. Consequences include community service, tutoring, counseling referral and future jury service.
Berkeley High School - Live, Life, and Learn: $750
Lauren Lovett, Teacher
Project Description: This project will support students with a variety of disabilities in addressing their needs in the following areas: 1) healthy meal planning, shopping, and preapration, 2) development of appropriate social, interpersonal, and language skills, and 3) supported pre-vocational experiences to practice these skills in activities that involve both students with disabilities and their non-disabled peers.
Wee Poets - Bullies In Schools: $1,000
Sally Joan Baker, Executive Producer & Host
Project Description: Wee Poets will produce a series of several 30-minute videotapes at Berkeley Community Media, Channel 28, about Bullies in Schools. Bullies In Schools, is a "hands on" involvement of youth, from story conception to final production. Approxiamtely three million Alameda & Contra Costa County viewers will watch the videotapes on Comcast, Channel 26, and on Channel 28. Fourth and fifith grade students will write and recite poems, perform skits or dances, or draw posters about bullying they have experienced, or think might happen to them or other children. Ms. Sally Baker, Host, will interview the children and a guest speaker with expertise in bullying issues. The children will interact with the guest.
Oxford Elementary School - Closing the GAP for our English Language Learners: $1,500

Project Description: There are two components to this project. The school day component will use a credentialed teacher to give explicit, direct instruction in vocabulary development and grammar. The afterschool component will use tutors to follow up with the students to reinforce this learning and provide homework support.
Berkeley Symphony - Music in the Schools (MITS): $2,000
Darren Rich, Director of Development
Project Description: Berkeley Symphony works with the Berkeley Unified School District to supplement school curricula, drawing students into an engaging exploration of music. MITS addresses a variety of areas from the California Performing Arts Content Standards (PACS) and gives students the opportunity to actively particpate in performing with an orchestra.
Rosa Parks Environmental Science Magnet - PlayWorks Program: $5,000
Paco Furlan, Principal
Project Description: Staff of the PlayWorks Program include play and physical activity into a positive school environment. The project offers opportunities throughout the entire day, beginning before the first bell rings and continuing until after the last bell rings. The PlayWorks staff will help support classroom teachers in the delivery of physical education to students through class game time as well as providing structure, support and additional adult supervision on the school yard during recess.
Malcolm X Arts, & Academics Magnet Elemnatary School - Project Connect: $2,000
Alexander Hunt, Principal
Project Description: Project Connect brings the school community together to close the achievemen gap.Target students receive academic support after school with their classroom teachers, and particpate in a Saturday camp. Parents/guardians attend six mandatory workshops, which aim to empower them with additional tools to help their children get the best possible education.
SEEDS (Services Encourage Effective Dialogue and Solutions) Community Resolution Center - Restorative Justice Initiative at Longfellow Magnet Middle School: $5,000
Adriana Solis Lopez, Fund Development & Communications Manager
Project Description: A Restorative Justice (RJ) practice for schools is a dialogue based approach to crime, conflict and community building involving all stakeholders by a restorative circle process. The circles process will provide opportunities for all participants to discuss issues and find solutions collabortaively. Restorative Justice practices build community by increasing empathy and thereby decreasing behavioral disruption.
Berkeley Arts Magnet Elementary School - Student, Teacher & Family Support Services: $1,500
Kristin Collins, Principal
Project Description: The Student, Teacher & Family Support Services Program will allow professionall, mental-health counsleors, who already know BAM staff and students, to be on site and available for real-time consultations with teachers and strategic interventions with students. Their services will help ensure that students and teachers are productively engaged in the classroom during school hours.
Community Partnerships Academy - Writing for College: $5,000
Annie Johnston, Coordinator & Teacher, Berkeley High School
Project Description: We believe that writing is the most fundamental skill needed for success in high school, and an esstenial skill for college success. In "Writing for College," students will receive eight sessions with writing coaches from Writers Coach Connection. Staff will meet with individual students once a month to review their writing builds skills and confidence in their writing. We believe student pass rates of 86% and 60% of juniors signing up for Advanced Placement (AP) augmentation are directly connected to this individual atttenion to writing.

In Dulci Jubilo, Inc. has supported public school teachers in enriching their classrooms by funding creative teaching and learning projects.
The Board of Directors' focus is on grant giving that impacts low-performing students.
Fundable projects aim to narrow the achievement gap and/or provide engaging learning experiences for young people and their families during and after school.
In Dulci Jubilo, Inc. encourages proposals for school-wide or community-wide projects.
Grant proposals include funds for projects during the 2011/2012 school year. Projects are funded for one-year with the possibility of a one-year renewal. Maximum grant request is $10,000. The grant-making process is complete for 2011.
